Luke Johnson

I’m a Berlin-based journalist. I cover politics, media, and economics from Berlin to Moscow, with a special focus on the War in Ukraine and its regional effects.

In covering Eastern Europe since the early 2010s, I have interviewed public figures such as Alexei Navalny, a Ukrainian writer held captive in a Russian-separatist prison, and reported on Ukrainians coming back to their home country to volunteer and fight and an illegal opposition protest in Moscow. In 2022, my reporting took me to Poland and Ukraine.

I have written for a variety of outlets. My book reviews have appeared in print for The Parliament Magazine and my commentary in the Washington Post Opinions section. My reporting and analysis has also been published by The New Republic, Fortune, The Daily Beast, Medium, and Al-Jazeera America. I write a regular column for Internationale Politik Quarterly, published by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), and also have been the site’s social media editor.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, I started a newsletter, Public Sphere, for people trying to understand the crisis of democracy in the United States and abroad. I conducted Zoom Q&As with notable figures such as Dr. Fiona Hill, Rep. Peter Meijer, and Marie Yovanovitch

I have appeared on MSNBC and BBC Radio, and given interviews to media outlets in Ukraine and Poland about U.S. politics. I speak fluent Russian and some German. I have been certified in Hostile Environment Awareness Training (H.E.A.T).

In May 2018, I finished an M.A. in Global Affairs at the Jackson School at Yale University. I was the Managing Editor for Articles at the Yale Journal of International Affairs.

Prior to Yale, I worked in Washington as a Politics Reporter and Associate Editor at HuffPost, covering Congress, campaigns, and elections. I also worked for Radio Free Europe as a correspondent, and for the American Independent News Network as a reporter.
